# How long money takes to arrive

> Collections land in seconds, mobile money payouts in minutes, bank settlement in days, and the reasons for each are different.

There are three different waits in a payment business, and people often quote one when they mean another. Separating them makes the whole thing easier to plan around.

## 1. Money coming in: seconds

A mobile money collection is credited to your balance as soon as the network confirms it, which is usually seconds after the customer enters their PIN. The slow part is the customer, not the rail: the prompt sits on their phone until they answer it.

Card payments clear in seconds too, though a card can be disputed months later, which is a different kind of waiting.

## 2. Money out to a wallet: seconds to minutes

A payout to a mobile money account does not need the recipient to do anything, so it is genuinely quick. Minutes rather than seconds when a network is busy, and occasionally longer at month end when everybody in the country is being paid at once.

## 3. Money out to a bank: days

A wire is the slow one, and its speed depends entirely on how far it travels:

- Within the country the money is sent from: about one business day.
- Within a currency union, such as the East African Community or the XOF zone: about two.
- Anywhere else: about three, because the payment passes through a correspondent bank, usually via USD or EUR.

Weekends and public holidays are not business days. A Friday request generally lands on Tuesday, and a request before a long weekend lands later than anyone expects, which is worth knowing before you promise a supplier a date.

**Planning around it**

Keep enough in your balance to cover payouts for the days a settlement is in flight. The most common cash flow mistake here is settling everything to the bank on a Friday and discovering on Monday that payroll runs from the balance that is now empty.
